Clibbon Tinplate Collection

04/10/2012     Toys & Collectables

Back in 1998 Lacy Scott & Knight, along with Peter Crichton, were lucky enough to be instructed by avid model collector John Clibbon to sell the majority of his cherished collection of tinplate and related wares. John's passion for tinplate had begun back in the 1940s while he was a wartime evacuee in the Forest of Dean area and stayed with him throughout his life. The sale which contained numerous examples from all of the major European makers to include Bing, Marklin, Bassett Lowke, Lowenstein, Carette and many others, some of which were never identified, was a huge success. The 450 lots largely sold well above expectation and the sale is still talked about to this day.

Like most serious collectors, John could not bear to part with the complete collection, and held back a number of his favourite pieces to include several station buildings, locomotives & tenders, wagons & coaches, bridges, tunnels, trackside accessories etc. These were all placed in a huge display cabinet and frequently admired by the family and visitors to the Clibbon home. However, following a long illness, John passed away in November 2008, and after three more years have passed the family has decided that now is the time to auction the remainder of the collection for future generations to enjoy.

The sale will be held on Saturday 17thNovember at 10am, with viewing the day prior 12-7pm. An extensively illustrated glossy catalogue will be available from late October and our website will feature at least one illustration of every single lot which can be magnified. A small number of items are illustrated on this page. Condition reports will be available upon request.
